Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder shared this information while inspecting the progress of the project on Tuesday.

During the visit, the Mayor announced that the Municipal Corporation has planned to construct a modern community wedding hall for financially weaker and Below Poverty Line families residing within the municipal area. A suitable site for the project was also identified during the inspection. He stated that the facility is expected to be completed within the next five months, enabling common people to organize weddings and other social functions at an affordable cost. In addition, parking facilities accommodating 80 cars and 200 motorcycles are also being planned adjacent to the venue.

According to the Mayor, the once-neglected and abandoned banks of the Howrah River are gradually being transformed into an attractive tourist destination. The initiative aims not only to provide improved civic amenities and modern recreational facilities for city residents but also to attract tourists from across the country and abroad. Various infrastructures, including a cafeteria, children’s play area, and walking tracks, are being developed within the project area.

Responding to questions from journalists regarding the controversy surrounding the eviction of allegedly illegal shops in the Netaji Chowmuhani area, the Mayor said that unauthorized roadside establishments would not be allowed as part of efforts to free the city from waterlogging and traffic congestion. However, he added that the concerns of traders who have been conducting business there for many years are being considered from a humanitarian perspective. Chief Minister Manik Saha is scheduled to meet with the affected traders tomorrow, following which a decision will be taken.

It may be noted that the Riverfront Development Project, being implemented by Agartala Smart City Limited, covers approximately two kilometres from Steel Bridge to Dashamighat along the Howrah River. The project, launched in 2021 at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore, has now reached its final stage.

During the inspection, the Mayor was accompanied by AMC Commissioner Saju Wahed and other officials associated with the Smart City project.

Under the project, work on strengthening embankments for flood control, river dredging and cleaning, landscaping, walking paths, cycling tracks, playgrounds, and health and yoga centres has already been completed. Measures have also been taken to install wastewater treatment facilities and a sewage treatment plant, transforming the riverbank into a modern public space.

The Dashamighat area has already been equipped with decorative lighting and food stalls. Additionally, an Arts and Crafts Village, a Health Park, and organic farming spaces for local nurseries have been developed.

Looking ahead, a major flood protection project worth ₹248 crore has been proposed for the Battala area, involving the construction of approximately 9.33 kilometres of flood defence infrastructure along the river embankment. The government believes that this initiative will significantly enhance the water-carrying capacity of the Howrah River and contribute to a long-term solution to Agartala’s flood-related challenges.

Through the implementation of the Riverfront Development Project, the administration aims to transform the banks of the Howrah River into an environmentally sustainable, aesthetically appealing, and tourism-friendly destination while creating new recreational and social infrastructure for the residents of the city.

Agartala, June 16: The much-awaited Riverfront Development Project along the banks of the Howrah River is set to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister within the next few days.
