Agartala, July 2: No one involved in the drug trade will be spared under any circumstances. The Chief Minister has already declared a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against drug traffickers, and the government is taking strict action in line with that policy. This was stated by Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy at a state-level programme held at Town Hall in Agartala on Thursday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026.<\/p>\n
The minister said that due to the government\u2019s continuous drives, large quantities of narcotics are being seized from different parts of the state. Compared to the previous year, seizures of narcotics increased by 104 percent last year, and drugs worth around Rs 1,600 crore were confiscated. At the same time, the number of arrests under the NDPS Act has also increased significantly.<\/p>\n
He said that earlier Tripura was used only as a corridor for drug trafficking, but now the youth of the state are also being targeted. Therefore, greater vigilance and awareness are needed to deal with this situation. The state government is focusing on increasing the number of de-addiction centres as well as engaging young people in sports and other positive activities.<\/p>\n
Tinku Roy further said that it is not possible for the police or administration alone to build a drug-free Tripura. Parents, teachers, social workers and the general public\u2014all must take part in this fight. He also remarked that those who speak about building a drug-free society must reflect that message in their own lives as well. He added that the law against drug traffickers has now been made even stricter.<\/p>\n
Besides the minister, the programme was attended by Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Deepak Majumdar, West Tripura Zilla Parishad in-charge Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, along with officials from various government departments, representatives of educational institutions, social workers and students.<\/p>\n
At the event, winners of the debate, poster and slogan competitions were awarded prizes. In addition, under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction, the best performing district and organisation were also felicitated.
