Agartala, June 9: Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Deepak Majumder on Tuesday inaugurated the beautification project of the historic Chinaihani Mahashmashan in the capital city. The event was attended by corporator Jagadish Das, former public representative Dr. Dilip Das, and several other dignitaries. Although the programme was briefly disrupted by rain, it was completed successfully.
Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the demand for relocation and development of the crematorium had existed for a long time, particularly due to the widening of the airport-bound road. To address this demand, AMC undertook a beautification project worth around ₹20 lakh. The project includes improved lighting, seating arrangements, internal roads, environmental enhancement, and other civic amenities.
Addressing the media, Majumder stated that a crematorium is not merely a place for last rites but also an important part of the area’s religious and social heritage. He announced that an electric crematorium furnace would be installed at Chinaihani Mahashmashan within the next three months at a cost of ₹1.20 crore. Two additional electric furnaces are also planned for the Bottala Mahashmashan.
The Mayor further revealed that AMC has already established a dedicated crematorium for pet animals at Hapania. He noted that in the past, carcasses of dead animals were often disposed of indiscriminately in drains, rivers, and other public places due to the lack of a proper facility. The new pet crematorium has been set up to address this issue and ensure environmentally responsible disposal.
He added that alongside improving civic services, the Municipal Corporation is continuously working on the development of crematoriums, burial grounds, and other social infrastructure across the city.
As part of the beautification project, the crematorium premises have been upgraded with improved landscaping, lighting, seating facilities, internal pathways, and other essential public amenities, making the site more accessible and dignified for visitors.
